Holographic Ki
Multimedia installation, various material, dimensions variable
Description
Canadian dancer and interdisciplinary artist Hanako Hoshimi-Caines creates performative projects that activate notions of pleasure, the familiar, and the imaginary. Adapted from multimedia opus Holographic Ki, which was initiated in 2021 in collaboration with the artist’s mother, the two sculptures in this exhibition are made using household items, such as cushions, an IKEA armchair, brooms, and textiles. These “furniture-monsters” are reminiscent of childhood cushion forts and giant marionettes ready to come alive in the gallery. Tiny flatscreens are embedded in the structures, displaying performance documentation filmed during an online exhibition project organized by the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery last year. In the videos, we see Hoshimi-Caines performing movements inspired by 1950s rock ‘n’ roll that shaped her mother’s youth, interacting with the sculptures, or dancing along with her mother and other performers.
Rooted in a reflection on intimacy and eternity, Hoshimi-Caines’ sculptures perform the “home” while celebrating the infinite nature of the world outside of us. The works shown here invite the viewer to consider intersections between the posture of the host and the figure of the ancestor, while addressing issues of identity through an intergenerational approach and references to Japanese culture.
